Dr. Somnath Sethi, 70+yrs old – 102 marathons and going strong

Dr. Sethi, MD (Gen Med), practices at Sethi Nursing Home, Kurukshetra, and is a fitness enthusiast. His fitness at 70+ age is amazing and to know that he had a crippling accident in 2011 is unbelievable!! (The treating surgeons told him to forget running in 2011).
His life story is an inspiration.

Dr. Sethis’s 97 th half-marathon – 21 km covered in 2 hours 9 minutes (August 2022)

Dr Sethi completes 102 marathons

Dr. Som Nath Sethi, (70+ years), an avid runner, suffered a bad accident with comminuted fractures (with intraarticular involvement) of both bones of his leg and also 6 ribs on Kurukshetra’s roads during a morning run in the year 2011. He was operated on and was bedridden for more than 3 months.
The treating surgeons told him to forget running and he was also told that “even being able to walk without help would be a miracle for him” in view of the severity of the injuries he suffered. Prior to the accident, he was a champion “Race Walker”. Dr. Sethi was not the one to give up easily!! After discharge from the hospital, he started to use a ‘walker’ to help him gain control of his legs and eventually be able to walk with a stick.
Once he reached his home, the first thing he did was to go to the stadium where he had earlier been training for “Race Walk” and, with a “walker”, he completed one full lap of 400 meters in 33 minutes of determined effort. And he continued to practice walking and eventually running.
The very next year, he participated in the “IDBI Marathon” and then also the “Airtel Marathon”. It became his passion, and perhaps obsession, to participate in marathons. Post recovery from the accident, he participated in approximately 50 marathons (and the count may have gone up), including one “50 km ultramarathon”11 “full 42.2 km marathons”, and one international (Singapore) marathon. He stood 3rd in “The Standard Chartered Mumbai2017 Half Marathon”. He also stood 2nd in the “5th Hindustan Full Marathon, New Delhi”.
He attributes all this to his yoga, a disciplined life, regular sleep, the gym for strengthening his muscles, and swimming. He personally feels God has given us immense potential which we don’t use.
Also, he was the topper of Punjab University at the time of admission to medical college, Patiala, in 1971.
